Monthly donations keep this Ohio State professor and alumna connected to her ‘why.’
After graduating from The Ohio State University with a master’s degree and PhD in biomedical engineering, Tanya Nocera transitioned into a teaching-focused faculty role. “I’m really passionate about supporting students and helping them get to where they want to be in their future careers. I get the opportunity every day to mentor the next generation,” she says.
When Nocera joined the faculty, she also began giving to the Department of Biomedical Engineering through a monthly payroll deduction. “I do that because I’m so inspired by the curiosity and thoughtfulness of my students and the amazing work that my colleagues do in the biomedical engineering space,” says Nocera, who directs the department’s Medical Product Development Program. “Having this opportunity to give back in ways that could fund additional activities or supports what my students and colleagues are trying to achieve every day is really fulfilling for me.”
Looking back on her giving over the past 11 years, Nocera can see how small monthly gifts add up over time and make a big difference. Her practice of giving also helps Nocera remember all the wonderful things she has gained from Ohio State. “It helps keep me connected to my ‘why’: Why do I get up every day and spend more time here than I do in my own house? And why do I love that?” she says. “I love being with my students and with my colleagues, and giving is a great way to represent that ‘why’ for me.”
“It doesn't have to be much. A little bit can go a very long way, and it really can make a difference.” - Tanya Nocera
